And it is honorable . . .
Where do we begin? Let’s start out with “Once Upon A Time”
. . . Our father of faith, Abraham (called Abram at the time he tithed) had won a battle with certain kings according to chapter 14 of Genesis. Verse 16, “He brought back all the goods…” Then in vs. 18 Abram meets up with Melchizedek, king of Salem, who happens to be a type of Christ. Abram “gives Melchizedek a tenth of all.”
Hebrews 7: 1-2 bears this out. “. . . Melchizedek . . . met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils. . . ”
Okay, so what is the importance of this anyway? So what if Abram gave a tenth to some king? Well, let us explain . . .
Hebrews 5: 5, “So, also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”; just as He says also in another passage, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Jesus was not Melchizedek, but ordained to be a priest forever “according to the order of Melchizedek.” Vs. 10 makes it more clear.
Hebrews 6:20, “….Where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
So, who is Melchizedek? He is a high priest, a type of Christ. The high priest receives the tithe from Abraham, and the Levite priests are ordered to tithe unto God. “And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes.”
It is honorable . . . So, now we are getting a picture that tithing was done in an attitude of honor. When we tithe and give offerings, we are giving to Christ! We can also see that tithing was done out of honor before it was a law. Hebrews 7 speaks of how it became law. Malachi explains it well:
Malachi 3:8 says, “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In tithes and contribution(offerings). “
Vs. 9 ~ “You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation!”
Vs. 10 ~ “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
Vs. 11 ~ “Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it may not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes,” says the Lord of hosts.”
Vs. 12 ~ “And all the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land,” says the Lord of hosts.”
Talk about promises!!! Because . . . It’s Powerful!!!! Tithing releases the Hand of God. Anytime you engage or open the door for God, you are releasing power, because all of God is supernatural!!
All you have to do is do a simple search on the Internet to read 1000’s of testimonies of people that got super blessed miraculously because of their tithing. Power, power, and more power of God pouring out to everyone who will believe (trust and obey).
Well all right! It’s the Word of God to tithe. So, why do so many people put it out of their minds to do such a thing? Have you ever read some of the accounts of people who went to hell and to heaven? Many saw people in hell who were there because knew to tithe in faith but they refused to tithe. Wow… that’s serious. We don’t need that account though to do the will of God.
Why is it so important to God that we tithe?
1. Obeying God’s Word is ALWAYS important to God. Did not Jesus Himself say in John 4:34, “My meat is to do the will of Him Who sent Me, and to accomplish His work?”
2. Is not money one of the most powerful tools God uses to test our love and faithfulness toward Him?
3. If it is true that God wants ALL of us, then why not give Him our tithes?
How many more verses do we need to believe that it is the Word of God to give our tithes and offerings to God?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean unto your own understanding.” Prov. 3:5
You might say, “I only make a little amount of money and I have to feed my family!” You might say, “I have too many debts to pay off and I won’t have enough money at the end of the month to pay my bills.”
All of that may be true. So what you are saying is that God is not supernatural.
What you are saying is ~~ that God doesn’t see.
What you are saying is ~~ that God doesn’t care.
What you are saying is ~~ “I know better than God, so I cannot possibly do what His Word says to do.”
Think for a moment . . . What is the reward of faith? What is the reward of doubt, fear, and rebellion?
Jesus used an example of a man “doing good” in Luke 18: 12 proclaiming he paid tithes on all that he got. Even though God used this parallel to measure a man’s heart, it is still understood that tithing is yet the right thing to do. Even in Luke 12:42, Jesus compares the good of tithing from the Pharisees, but up girds them about another issue.
Tithing being scriptural is proven throughout the whole of scripture. So where do we go from here?
We like to go back to the promise God gave in Malachi, chapter three. How many times have we (Jonathan & Stephanie) had nothing yet were needy for more? We’ve been in tight spots where we had to pay bills and had nothing coming in. We know what it is like to not know if we could eat the next day, have fuel for the car to get anywhere even if we had more than a quarter to our entire name. What did we do? We prayed for God’s provision, standing on the Word in Malachi, and God provided. We kept tithing, no matter what — showing God our faith and our immense love for HIM.
It’s Supernatural ! On top of that, we gave whatever more we could give, that’s what we did! We put God to the test. We gave our understanding, our bread, our hope, and faith because of our Love for HIM!!! You know what happened? We have always had miraculous provision at those times. Each time, some unexpected money came to us, and in return, we had more “seed” (money) to give to God! Now we ask you, do you think God delights in being glorified? You can count on it!!
OK, who do we give our tithings to? There are sooooo many verses on tithing. Many of the old teachings are very controlling and manipulative out of fear. But, God has plenty to say about tithing and offerings. By the way, both tithing and offerings have to be in place. Not just tithing!! Malachi 3: 8 bears witness to that.
Whatever you do, be led of the Holy Spirit. If He says to give your tithings somewhere, do it. Not what man says, but what you hear in prayer. First thing that probably comes to your mind is the “church”. Who is the church? What does the Bible teach on the church? His kids are the church! He also calls each of us believers kings, queens, and priests! All of us true believers! Yes!!! We are the church!!!
First of all, you need to hear this clearly: No way are we implying that you should not give to your local church if God is leading you to do that. Most people do not pray where they are to give their tithings. Abraham knew to give it to a king. There was absolutely no formality involved there. He gave to whom blessed him. It’s a fact.
The four walls are not God’s only place. Four walls are not “church”. It is two or more gathered together in His name. Isn’t that what the Bible teaches? How many years do you think Christianity didn’t have a building to meet in that was called, “church”. Think about it. We gather together in His sanctuary and honor Him. We gather together in His sanctuary and honor Him. But as you know (hear this), that has been taking place for centuries, and not always in a place called “church” with some denominational name attached to it. Please let go of the religious stuff you’ve cleaved to all these years, and cleave rather to the Word of God. He is so much more fun, and (again) freeing!!!
God also says, we’re temples! We are His temple of the Holy Spirit! Did you know that God commanded His people to bring the tithes (which are their first fruits of whatever they gleaned or received, or reaped or gained) to a certain place, then . . . that year or next, all of the people were to enjoy it? Yes, all of the people. Here is that scripture written out for you in the NIV and found in Deuteronomy 14:22-29 . . .
22 “Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.
28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.”
Did you know that Abraham gave a tithe of his spoils from a battle (no crops or farm)?
Did you know we are not to “muzzle the ox”? WHO IS FEEDING YOU SPIRITUALLY? Many people? How fun! How exciting to see where God is calling you to give that week or that month.
Do you see a need in the body of Christ? Is there someone struggling financially? God has a lot to say about that, and has made it very clear to help those people out. We know countless people who give their tithes (and offerings!!) to family or friends. If you want them to pray for you, ask them! Make a place for them to feed you in some way. But please, let God be God. Do what His Word says.
As you can see, there are many scriptures about giving and where to and whom. Let God show you!! It’s great! . Perhaps we will write them all out for you. But in the meantime, let God show you!! It’s great!
It may be, one tithing check goes to a prison ministry and another goes to blessing the believers connected with Israel, or a TV evangelist or teacher. Or our ministry! We aren’t trying to get you to give to us though. We’re just teaching. Yet, thank you all who love supporting us through prayer and funds as God leads. We too have had many of our financial miracles happen through people tithing to us and giving us offerings. Sometimes, saved up and one big lump! Now, that’s fun! : ))
It is important and imperative to understand that giving to the church (remember, all that you do it to be unto God) is normal and scriptural. Again, there is nothing here saying that you are not to give to your local church. We are only stressing that you need to seek God where your tithing is to go. Tithing is simply His money you are giving back to Him, and with thanksgiving!! Everything is about God. Colossians says in chapter three that whatever we do, do as unto God, not as unto man.
Final thought on that…. (a however) . . . If “leaders” (regardless if pastor, prophet, etc.) are telling you can only give to them, they are not relying on God for their needs and ministry. Or else they are going out of their own understanding or what they’ve been taught. If God wants their ministry to succeed, He is faithful to provide, for “faithful is He Who has called you, Who will also do it.” No one can rely on man to fulfill their vision. We have to have our vision on God’s calling. Be sure to see what God is saying to you each season, for God alone knows the beginning and ending of everything. Everything…..
Aaahh…. So that is the strength behind tithing. It’s giving our understanding and faith to Him because we love Him above everything. (Meditate on that for a few moments)
How else can our God’s hand be released supernaturally if we don’t throw our natural and faith on HIM????
“HIS BANNER OVER US IS LOVE” Song of Solomon 2:4
His Word says in Hebrews 11:6, “For without faith it is impossible to please HIM, for whoever comes to God, must believe that HE IS and that HE IS a rewarder of those who constantly & persistently seek HIM.”
It’s Freeing . . . So, what did God do? He gave us a tool to test our faith. He gave us a tool to see whether or not He is more important. It’s not about money; it’s about obedience because of your love for Him. You can’t show that unless you give away your understanding, and you cannot do that unless God is your first love and you trust Him completely.
Once you start tithing and giving offerings, you will be set free!!!!!! Your money will never be an issue again. It feels good and you will feel liberated from the fear. Fear is never of God. Liberty is always the Holy Spirit. Tithing opens the doors of heaven in times of need. You never know when you need a miracle! Don’t be limited to just thinking about money. Every act of obedience to God’s Word, makes you a child of God. He is therefore your Daddy. Healing is your daily bread. That’s another teaching!
God bless you as you grow from glory to glory in giving God all that He asks. You have because of Who He IS. You get to have because of Who He IS. Lean on Him and prove Him this day. Watch how God gets glorified and loves on you!!!
